Remember when you were back at university and you were faced with making decisions about what career path to follow? Let’s face it, most of us had no idea what was involved on a day-to-day basis in the various professions we were interested in. Daryl Sisson, Managing Director, Pacific, explains why events like Refinitiv’s University Dealing Challenge are so valuable for students, what is it and how can it help them become the FX and financial market traders of the future.
- Six of Australia’s leading universities were given the chance to see what it’s really like in real life dealing room and to experience the practical skills and techniques associated with trading and managing risk.
- The University Dealing Challenge bridges academic and professional environments and strengthens Refinitiv’s commitment to foster innovation and collaboration at every level of the financial ecosystem.
- The University of Sydney was declared the winning team, however, all teams gained a wealth of insight into financial markets and learnt practical techniques associated with managing risk.

Refinitiv’s University Dealing Challenge
That’s what has been so rewarding about the Refinitiv University Dealing Challenge because we have been able to give students from six of Australia’s leading universities with the chance to see what it is really like in a real life dealing room and equip them with practical skills and techniques associated with trading and managing risk.
Working with FX/financial markets veterans Chris Howlett, MD of ACI Australia, and Kevin O’Reilly of FXware Pty Ltd, who actually designed and delivered the program, we have been able to provide these business/finance students with a wealth of hands-on practical experience. Between them Chris and Kevin have delivered simulated challenges all over the world but this was the first time it has been run with Australian students.

Over two-days in a simulated dealing room, the students experienced the typical events that can happen during the course of the trading day – from straight forward to complex … right through to a crisis. The students were required to rapidly assess the potential impacts of the different events on the markets as they happen and adjust their portfolios accordingly.

The University Dealing Challenge bridges academic and professional environments and strengthens Refinitiv’s commitment to foster innovation and collaboration at every level of the financial ecosystem. Students are given the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of financial markets, prepare for professional life with industry-standard tools, and stay ahead of the game.
In the nine weeks leading up to the face-to-face challenge, the students received weekly webinar sessions covering a range of topics including best practice decision-making, the impact of a pandemic on markets and how to deal with regulators.

While University of Sydney was declared the winning team, we were delighted that all the participating university teams felt they gained a wealth of insight into financial markets and learnt practical techniques associated with managing risk. The other universities involved in the challenge were RMIT, University of Sydney, University of WA, University of Adelaide, Macquarie University and Curtin University.
Congratulations to @Sydney_Uni for winning the @Refinitiv University Dealing Challenge. Hope all participants from six leading Australian universities gained in-depth knowledge of #FinancialMarkets, and practical skills in #Trading and #RiskManagement: https://t.co/giSbX7x4p4 pic.twitter.com/ift1ASIVOS
