Driving the data conversation: The new #RefinitivSocial100 2020

The coronavirus global pandemic in 2020 has few historic parallels, making it highly challenging to interpret and predict its impact. Refinitiv has sought to provide answers and drive the data conversation by liaising with key social opinion leaders on key industry themes and strategies.

With financial market data as a key focus criteria this year, we are glad to announce the 2020 #RefinitivSocial100 list today.

Since the inaugural list in 2019, #RefinitivSocial100 has brought together a diverse group of 100 conversation starters and leaders on social media – collectively exploring key themes within trading, investment banking, risk, regulation, compliance, wealth management, innovation, ESG and sustainability.  We see them as opinion-leaders, commentators and future-thinkers in the themes and trends impacting financial markets.

From CXOs and start-up founders, through to academics and analysts as well as financial consultants and technology experts. For anyone interested in the fast-evolving field of fintech, it’s a must-see index of knowledgeable professionals.

For 2020, we sought to re-focus our efforts to include social opinion leaders who are driving conversations on key industry themes and strategies, such as data optimization, risk and supply chain management as well as technology transformation. This new approach also saw the introduction of new entrants recognized for their data insights around ESG, climate and sustainability.

It’s worth remembering that, for all the algorithms, automation and machine learning, fintech is driven by human connection, human collaboration and human ingenuity. The #RefinitivSocial100 recognizes global individuals whose knowledgeable insight and timely commentary is helping to lead the financial data conversation on social media.

The methodology and data behind #RefinitivSocial100

To create our Top 100 list, we worked with a team of social media analysts and compiled a long list of 200+ keywords. The list was then ranked by how each individual’s LinkedIn and Twitter content performed against four key metrics:

  • Impressions: how many times posts appeared in social streams.
  • Relevance: the degree to which content is focused on key areas in fintech.
  • Resonance: the extent to which posts were engaged with.
  • Reach: the number of people reached.

The long list was then sorted according to Topical Engagement, which is an equation, combining a weighted score of relevance and resonance for the 2 platforms mentioned. From these scores, we ranked the top 100 influencers that would become the #RefinitivSocial100.

This means that the #RefinitivSocial100 champions quality and relevance over quantity and number of followers’. This ensures that the most important and impactful messages are given the spotlight they deserve.
